While most of you probably already have a Balance Board for the likes of Wii Fit and perhaps even a Wii Zapper to aid your shooting in games such as Link’s Crossbow Training, there are plenty of other accessories you can pick up to spice up Wii gameplay.

PC Mag has compiled a fun guide to ‘The 10 Coolest Wii Controllers’ for anyone who’s not sure what we’re going on about.

Take for example the Wii Surgical Kit, compatible with the Trauma Center: Second Opinion game, which provides you with all the tools a doctor needs to get to work on saving patients.

Or perhaps you’re a big Samba De Amigo fan who wants to fit their Wii remote and Nunchuk into a pair of maracas to celebrate a big fiesta in style, or a Star Wars obsessive that just has to have a pair of glowing light sabers to take into Jedi battles.

Whatever your tastes, there’s probably something for everyone when it comes to Wii controller peripherals.

Grey’s Anatomy: The Video Game allows you to play as your favourite doctors of Seattle Grace Hospital (the show’s setting), operating on patients and making the tough decisions they face each day. It’s not all life and death stuff though, as there’s room for some romance in the story too.

“The doctors of Seattle Grace Hospital deal with life-or-death consequences on a daily basis – it’s in one another that they find comfort, friendship and, at times, more than friendship. Together they’re discovering that neither medicine nor relationships can be defined in black and white. Real life only comes in shades of grey,” says publisher Ubisoft.

“As each doctor, players will make important personal and professional decisions, explore the direct relationships with each other, and perform the delicate surgeries the series is known for, all through fun and engaging game play.”

We think the Wii Remote’s perfect for surgery-based titles, and personally can’t wait for a game inspired by our favourite medical series to release on Wii. No, not Casualty, we’re talking about ER.

Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Games in fourth marked the little red plumber’s third appearance in the top ten, as zombie shooter The House Of The Dead: Overkill dropped two places to fifth.

The new Wii-exclusive adventure takes players into the world of Arthurian legend and offers Sonic the chance to become a knight.

Arming you with Sonic’s traditional speed and a sword to slay beasts like dragons, this fast-paced adventure will play out across a range of medieval-inspired locations including castles and underground caverns.

Targeted specifically at women, EA Sports Active has been developed with the help of fitness experts and, seeing as it’s cheaper than a gym membership, it looks like a pretty cost-effective way to give yourself a health kick.

Due out in May, it’s being billed as an exercise product with a more Western flavour than Wii Fit, and focuses on both the upper and lower body as well as cardiovascular exercises.

We think it’s about time the Wii Fit had a rival, although we wouldn’t want to go up against it considering its recent chart dominance.

Being a Wii update of an old GameCube favourite, the title allows you to use the Wii Remote to play strokes – much like in Wii Sports Tennis – and to unleash the Power Shots (which are different for each character) that you’ll need to master in order to win.

This is no realistic sports game like Virtua Tennis though. While it does have regular tennis courts it also features gimmick courts – in the Luigi’s Mansion one, for example, you’ll encounter ghosts which trip you up using banana peels.

As well as a standard tournament mode, the title offers a series of tennis-themed mini-games including ‘Artist on the Court’, which sees you hitting paintballs to make a picture.

Mario Power Tennis is also playable in split screen with a friend and features multiple control types that vary in difficulty, allowing players of all experience levels to get in on the action.

For the uninitiated, Rock Band allows you to perform in a virtual band by playing different peripherals modelled on real musical instruments (a guitar, drums and a microphone). You have to strum, beat or sing in time to notes that scroll down the screen, as the picture below shows, and it’s a real laugh, especially when played with friends.

When it launches the game will cost £39.99. Standalone guitars will also cost £39.99 and drums £49.99. Or you could buy the pair plus a microphone for £89.99.

Just to make things more confusing – or simpler perhaps – you’ll also be able to pick up the game, drums, guitar and microphone together for £109.99.

The game comes with loads of songs spanning all types of music pre-loaded on the disc, plus you can download extra tracks from the Rock Band online store.

In fact, the top seven games remained unchanged from last week, with The House Of The Dead: Overkill, Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Games, Ben 10: Alien Force, Animal Crossing: Let’s Go To The City and Guitar Hero: World Tour again following the top two.

The new accessory has yet to be given a release date but will hopefully arrive before the June launch of EA’s golf and tennis titles, most likely coinciding with the debut of Nintendo’s own Wii Sports Resort some time beforehand.

“The Wii MotionPlus accessory attaches to the end of the Wii Remote and, combined with the accelerometer and the sensor bar, allows for more comprehensive tracking of a player’s arm position and orientation, providing players with an unmatched level of precision and immersion,” according to Nintendo.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 and Grand Slam Tennis are just two of at least five Wii-specific EA Sports products currently in development and on target for 2009 releases. Another is Wii Fit rival EA Sports Active, which is due to launch in May.

As you can see in the picture below, the controller is similar to the Wii’s existing Classic Controller, but it introduces a pair of hand grips, plus some shoulder buttons not dissimilar to those found on PlayStation DualShock controllers.

The new pad is due to launch in Japan this summer and looks perfect if you fancy giving the Wii Remote or Wii Wheel a rest. Unfortunately though, there are no pricing details yet or even confirmation that it will be released in the west, but we see no reason why it wouldn’t be at some point down the line, especially if enough of you want one.
