Nintendo has admitted that Wii Music has divided opinion, with the game currently failing to hit the expected high notes sales-wise.
“I agree that Wii Music, as of now, has not achieved its true potential,” company president Satoru Iwata said recently.
“On the other hand, I feel that Wii Music is a software that elicits largely two extremely different reactions from consumers. There are people who highly appreciate it and those who do not appreciate it at all.”
Playable using the Wii Remote, Nunchuck and Balance Board, the music title lets up to four gamers play over 60 instruments using simple motions like strumming and drumming.
If you haven’t played Wii Music, be sure to check out the video below. In it, famed game designer Shigeru Miyamoto (the mastermind behind Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong and Wii Fit) demos the title for the first time by playing the Super Mario Bros. theme tune. It was definitely an eye opener at the time…
Despite Wii Music’s failure to ape the success of other Nintendo titles like Wii Fit, Iwata believes sales of Wii Music could pick up later down the line, just like they did with Brain Training.
“We do not like to think that we failed with Wii Music nor that we should abandon sales support. If we had approached Brain Training with that mentality, the software would have not achieved the current sales situation,” he said.
“For each of these products, we create them hoping for a winner, but it is impossible to hit a bullseye every time.”
Not every time perhaps, but using Iwata’s analogy, Nintendo certainly isn’t a slouch when it comes to launching darts.
