Sega’s confirmed plans to bring the latest edition of its smash tennis series to the Wii for the very first time.
Due to hit stores in May, Virtua Tennis 2009 for Wii will feature all of the sport’s top stars, including Maria Sharapova, Venus Williams, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and the fiery, big haired Scot Andy Murray.
While the Wii has it’s fair share of tennis games already, Virtua Tennis has long been seen as the king of realistic tennis titles, and the new game will offer a nice contrast to more casual offerings like Wii Sports Tennis, Sega Superstars Tennis and the upcoming Mario Tennis.
Boasting official tournament licenses and over 40 court environments, the game will include single player, multiplayer and online modes… “So many features of the Virtua Tennis series are perfect for the Wii platform,” said Gary Knight, Sega Europe’s marketing director. “The multiplayer court games in particular will be great fun to play with the whole family in the comfort of their homes!”
A release date has yet to be confirmed and we currently have no screens to bring you (Virtua Tennis 3 is pictured), but we wouldn’t be surprised to see the title launch alongside a major tennis event such as the French Open, which kicks off on May 24.
