INFOGRAPHIC: Nintendo Vs Sega: Video Game Logo Evolution

Mario and Sonic are two of the most instantly recognisable gaming characters in the world, created by two of the oldest gaming companies – Nintendo and Sega.

Did you know Nintendo originally started as a playing card company in 1889? It only evolved into a video game company in the late sixties, and today it is the world’s largest gaming company by revenue. Mario first appeared in the game ‘Donkey Kong’ in 1981. He’s 31 years old.  He’s looked that age since birth.

Sega were huuuge, set up in 1940 they only entered the home console market in 1982.  Nine years later Sonic was born.

And then the warring began!

For years Nintendo and Sega were fierce competitors.

Who remembers the SNES and Nintendo 64? The Sega Megadrive and the Dreamcast? Younger readers are forgiven for not knowing, and probably not being interested in those earlier consoles. (Would you be with the graphics we have today?)

A restructure of Sega in 2001 saw the demise of their video game console. The company ceased production and instead shifted the focus to video game software development for use on consoles manufactured by third-parties.

But hey, I’ve just given you a brief history about these two companies, the infographic below talks about the evolution of their logos. Take a gander…
